Eleven validated and tested analytical methods for determining susceptibility markers in body fluids are described here. Thus, this volume is a crucial and authoritative contribution towards an individualized risk assessment with respect to occupational toxicants. The detailed description of the analytical procedures is accompanied by chapters on the biochemical basis of markers of susceptibility as well as by recommendations for physicians on how to evaluate the analytical results. These recommendations have been established by the Senate Commission on the Investigation of Health Hazards of Chemical Compounds in the the work area of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG). The Commission is internationally acknowledged for its neutrality and is working strictly according to transparent, scientific criteria. The editor, J. Angerer, is head of the working group 'Analytical Chemistry' within the Commission.
